The 2011 Ford Explorer has gone the route of the Crossover SUV segment. Instead of traditional body-on-frame construction, Ford has opted for a more car-like unibody platform. This change allows for both improved fuel economy and greater overall size, while providing a more comfortable, car-like ride. The 2011 Explorer is available in three trim levels: Base, XLT, and Limited. The Base Explorer offers power accessories, 17" steel wheels, air conditioning, trip computer and privacy glass. The XLT features upgrades such as: 18" alloy wheels, digital key pad door locks, and rear parking sensors. Step up to the Limited and you will receive luxury upgrades including: heated leather upholstery, automatic parallel parking, universal garage door remote transmitter, and three climate zone controls.
Standard across trim lines is a 290 horsepower, 3.5L V6 engine paired to a 6-speed automatic transmission. A 237 horsepower turbocharged 2L 4-cylinder engine is optional as well. Every 2011 Explorer comes standard with front wheel drive, but four wheel drive (without a dedicated low gearing) is optional.
All major safety equipment is standard on the 2011 Ford Explorer, including antilock disc brakes, stability control, front-seat side airbags and first- and second-row side curtain airbags. The stability control system includes rollover sensing and trailer sway control. New features include parental controls for maximum speed and stereo volume.
